BALTIMORE, Md. — Erin Hawkins scored 18 points in the second half to help the Morgan State women's basketball team to a 65-57 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Monday night at Hill Field House. Hawkins finished with a game-high 20 points and added six rebounds, two assists and one block in 38 minutes.
NSU (0-11, 0-3 MEAC) led for most of the game after taking a 4-2 lead on a layup by Sasha Wilson (West Columbia, S.C.) with 18:09 left in the first half. A layup by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) put the Spartans up by eight, 27-19 going into halftime.
Morgan State (10-4, 2-1) came out focused in the second half and took the lead on a layup by Aaries Reed with 12:45 left in the game. But NSU would not give up and forced three ties later in the game.
A layup by Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) with 4:53 left tied it at 51-all, but Hawkins answered on the other end with one of her game-high five three-pointers to give the Lady Bears the lead for good. MSU outscored the Spartans 11-6 in the final 4:43 to seal the win.
NSU shot 33.8 percent (23-of-68) from the floor for the game and 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from beyond the arc. MSU shot 37.1 percent (23-of-62) from the field and 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from three-point range. Poor free-throw shooting hurt both teams as NSU was 6-of-14 (42.9 percent) from the charity stripe and MSU hit 12 of their 25 attempts (48.0 percent).
Corin Adams was the only other Lady Bear to score in double figures. She finished with 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Evans led NSU with 19 points and grabbed six rebounds. Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points and three assists, while Payne had 11 points, six boards and a game-high four steals. Wilson dropped in a career-high six points and matched her career-best of six boards.
NSU returns to action on Thursday in its home opener and final non-conference game against North Carolina Central. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
