HAMPTON, Va. — Chinyere Ukoh had a double-double of 16 points and 15 rebounds, while teammate Choicetta McMillian added 14 points off the bench to lead the Hampton University Lady Pirates to an 87-57 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at the HU Convocation Center.
Ukoh had 12 points and 11 boards in the first half, while McMillian was 4-of-7 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range for the game.
With the win, Hampton improves to 7-11 on the season and 4-3 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 0-17 overall and 0-7 in conference play.
The Spartans got on the board first with a layup by Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) with 19:34 left in the first half. Quanneisha Perry tied it up at 2-all after hitting two free throws with 19:06 remaining and a jumper by Melanie Warner at the 18:45 mark gave the Lady Pirates a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
NSU got within eight, 28-20, after two free throws by Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) with 5:50 left in the opening period, but the Lady Pirates went on a 25-7 run to take a 53-27 lead into halftime.
The Spartans got as close as 24, 69-45, on a jumper by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 9:40 left in the game, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
Ashlee Finley was the third Lady Pirate to score in double figures with 11 points. She also had six rebounds.
For NSU, both Payne (13) and Long (12) came off the bench to score in double figures. Tiffany McNair (Virginia Beach, Va.) had two points and a team-high seven boards, all in the second half.
The Spartans travel to the nation's capital to take on Howard at 6 p.m. on Monday.
