NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State women's basketball team resumes its non-conference schedule with a 7 p.m. matchup at Savannah State tonight. NSU (1-5) is coming off a 10-day break after dropping its MEAC opener, an 81-51 decision, to North Carolina A&T on Dec. 5. Danelle Tate led the Spartans with 14 points and Whitney Long contributed 13 points and four rebounds.
Long is averaging a team-leading 11.3 points per game. Marquilla Evans follows closely behind with 10.3 points per game and leads the team in rebounding (5.0 rpg).
Savannah State (7-3) defeated visiting Alabama State 45-36 on Sunday. Crissa Jackson led the Tiger offense with 15 points and pulled down seven boards, while Raven James grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. Jackson leads the team in scoring with 10.7 points per game. Alisha Neslon is the top rebounder on the team, averaging 7.0 boards per game.
NSU leads the all-time series with Savannah State 2-1. The teams last met on Dec. 19, 2007 in the University of North Florida Holiday Classic with SSU coming out on top 67-58. NSU's last victory over the Tigers came in the 2001-02 season when the Spartans posted a 63-47 win.
