DOVER, Del. – Paced by Donald Johnson's game-high 24 points, host Delaware State shot 60 percent from the floor en route to an 86-74 win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Hall.
Johnson was 8-of-13 from the floor and 4-of-7 from 3-point range for the Hornets (7-19, 5-6 MEAC), who were 32-of-53 from the floor and 9-of-17 (53 percent) from behind the arc. Their 60 percent field-goal accuracy is the highest by an NSU opponent this season.
Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored a career-high 20 points and Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) also scored 20 for the Spartans (8-14, 6-5).
DSU closed a tight first half with a 7-0 run to claim a 37-29 advantage going into the break. Up by 10 points early in the second half, the Hornets used a 12-3 run to all but salt the game away. Johnson hit two 3-pointers in that stretch, which ended with DSU ahead 60-41 with 10:48 left.
Arturo Dubois was 8-of-9 from the floor, scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for the Hornets. Fred Bouie scored 13 points and hit a trio of 3-pointers, Marcus Neal added 10 points, and Frisco Sandidge had eight points and 12 rebounds.
Pauline was 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-3 from 3-point range. It was his second straight game registering a career high in points. Pauline also had six rebounds, four steals and three assists. Kevin Worsley (Chesapeake, Va.) added 10 points and five rebounds off the bench, and fellow forward Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) contributed eight points and seven boards.
The Spartans play their final MEAC road game at 7:30 p.m. Monday night at Maryland Eastern Shore.
