NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) tied his own school record in the pole vault, senior Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) won the 800 meters and sophomore Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) hit the NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the 55-meter hurdles as the Spartans competed on Saturday at CNU's Vince Brown Invitational.
Dodd placed second in the pole vault, tying his own school-record clearance of 14 feet, 9 inches. It was the same mark he cleared on Jan. 10 at Virginia Tech. Harris crossed the finish line in 1 minute, 56.94 seconds to win the 800 meters for NSU's only individual first-place finish on the day.
Massenburg took home second place in the 55 hurdles in a time of 7.34 seconds. The time was ahead of the pace of his season-best time of 7.87 seconds in the 60 hurdles, which provisionally qualified him for that event at next month's NCAA Indoor Championship.
Freshman Quinten Walker (Hampton, Va.) also had a strong showing on Saturday. He was second in the 55-meter dash (6.45 seconds), and first among collegiate runners. Walker also ran a PR of 22.32 seconds to finish third in the 200 meters, .01 of a second behind teammate Thomas Speller(Chesapeake, Va.).
Other standout performances were turned in by Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.), who was second in the mile (4:18.98), and the 4x400 relay team of Speller, Harris, Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Travis Wilson (Norfolk, Va.), who won in 3:24.75.
The Vince Brown meet was NSU's last tune-up before next weekend's MEAC Indoor Championship. The Spartans will begin their quest for a fourth consecutive indoor MEAC title and seventh straight conference championship in all on Friday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
