NORFOLK, Va. — The Howard University women's basketball team was 26-of-52 (50 percent) from the field for the game, including 7-of-15 (46.7 percent) from 3-point range to post a 72-54 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall.
Howard (7-21, 6-9 MEAC) shot 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the field in the second half, outscoring NSU (1-25, 1-14) 46-24 along the way.
The Lady Bison got on the board first on a layup by Tamaya Daniels with 18:22 left in the first half. The Spartans answered on the other end with a jumper by Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) with 18:07 left.
A layup by Evans at the 14:18 mark put NSU up by one, 9-8, giving the Spartans a lead they would take into halftime. A jumper by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) with 19 seconds left sent NSU into the break with a 30-26 lead.
A layup by Zykia Brown with 15:18 left in the game put Howard up 33-32. The Lady Bison went on a 36-19 run capped by a jumper by Cherae Baulkman to increase Howard's lead to 18, 69-51 with 2:03 left in the game.
A made free-throw by Natalie Day with 32 seconds left in the game sealed the win for Howard.
Daniels led all scorers with 25 points and had seven rebounds, while Brown added 21 points and three assists. Day had 10 points and three boards.
Payne led the Spartans with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field (3-of-11 from 3-point range). Evans was the only other Spartan in double figures with 10 points.
The Spartans host North Carolina A&T in the regular-season finale for both on Thursday at 6 p.m. Senior Tashawna Higgins (Toronto, Ontario) will be honored during the Senior Night activities prior to the game.
