Women’s Tennis Picks Up 6-1 Win at N.C. Central

— The Norfolk State women's tennis team posted a 6-1 win over North Carolina Central on Saturday at the Cary Tennis Center.

NSU (3-5) won the doubles point after Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) and Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) and Chenge Tsapayi (Harare, Zimbabwe) posted wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles, repsectively.

NCCU's (3-8) only win came at No. 4 singles when Tsapayi fell 6-2, 6-4 to Monica Medina. The Spartans got dramatic singles wins from Morris, Astbury and Ashlee Daugherty (Las Vegas, Nev.). In her game at No. 2 singles with Ashley Rogers, Morris won the first set 6-4, but lost the second 6-4 before ending the game with a 6-1 win in the tiebreaker.

Astbury and Daugherty also won their games with tiebreaker victories at Nos. 3 and 6 singles, respectively.

The Spartans wrap up conference play on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against Florida A&M in Tallahassee, Fla.
