Women’s Tennis Falls 5-2 at FAMU

Ashlee Daugherty has NSU's only singles win against FAMU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision on Sunday against Florida A&M. FAMU improved to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 3-6, 0-4.

NSU took control of the match early by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. The doubles team of Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) and Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) posted an 8-6 win at No. 1 and Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) and Chenge Tsapayi (Harare, Zimbabwe) won 8-8, 7-5 (tie breaker) at No. 3.

But FAMU bounced back with wins at Nos. 1-5 singles to take the match. NSU's only singles win came at No. 6 when Ashlee Daugherty (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Danielle Riley 6-1, 6-0.

The Spartans end the regular season on Saturday at Virginia State. The match is scheduled to start at noon.
