Women’s Tennis Fall to Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina A&T

— The Norfolk State women's tennis team fell 6-1 to Bethune-Cookman and 4-3 to North Carolina A&T on Thursday at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Against B-CU, the Spartans (1-4, 0-2 MEAC) picked up their only win at No. 1 singles. Stepanka Velebova (Tachov, Czech Republic) defeated Katarina Szaboova 6-4, 6-1 for the win.

The Lady Wildcats swept all three doubles games and had wins at Nos. 2 thru 6 singles to take the match.

In the much closer match against A&T, Velebova and Lerissa Morris (Kingstown, SVG) teamed to win the No. 1 doubles 8-6. But the Lady Aggies won the next two doubles games to get the doubles point.

In singles play, Morris won at No. 2, defeating Azieb Nigatu 6-3, 6-3. NSU also got wins at No. 5 from Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) and at No. 6 from Chenge Tsapayi (Harare, Zimbabwe).

But A&T won at Nos. 1 and 4 and clinched the match on Jaymee Jones' 6-2, 6-4 win over Naeemah Brooks (Galloway, N.J.) at No. 4 singles.

The Spartans play South Carolina State at 9 a.m. and Maryland Eastern Shore at 1 p.m. on Friday.
