NORFOLK, Va. — Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) scored a game-high 15 points, and the Norfolk State defense held Hampton to 29 percent shooting in a 66-50 Spartans' win on Saturday before 4,550 fans at Echols Hall.
The win was the second in a row for the Spartans (3-12, 2-2). Hampton drops to 4-12, 1-3.
The Spartans used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to take control. Hampton missed nine of its 10 shots and had six turnovers during that stretch. Christian Morris (Bronx, N.Y.) had six points during the spurt, which ended with a three-point play by Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys (Bronx, N.Y.) that gave the Spartans a 27-13 lead with 4:57 left in the half.
The Pirates connected on just 8-of-30 (27 percent) from the floor during the half and trailed 33-22.
Hampton could never get it going against the Spartans' defense in the second half. NSU maintained a lead of at least 11 points in the period and eventually stretched its lead to 18 (60-42) on a 3-pointer by Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) with 3:07 left in the game.
The 50 points and 29 percent shooting posted by Hampton are both season lows for a Spartan opponent.
Morris finished with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks off the NSU bench. O'Quinn, Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) and Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.) scored eight points apiece. O'Quinn added three blocks and Pauline led all players with five assists. Deloach tallied a season-high five steals, matching his career high.
Vincent Simpson led Hampton with 13 points and Darrion Pellum added 10.
