NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team suffered a 55-46 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference loss against Howard on Monday night at Echols Hall. Howard improved to 7-9 overall and 3-2 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 2-11, 0-5.
The Lady Bison started the game on a 6-0 run, but NSU rallied back to tie the game at 9-9 after a layup by Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) with 14:22 left in the first half. The Spartans soon found themselves down by 15, 29-14, after a 20-5 run by Howard. NSU cut the deficit to 11, 29-18, going into halftime.
Despite shooting 47.6 percent (10-of-21) from the field in the second half, NSU could get no closer than five, 43-38, in the second period. Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) hit a jumper with 7:33 left in the game to close the gap to five, but the Lady Bison defense tightened and only allowed NSU to score eight more points for the rest of the game.
Zykia Brown led all players with 25 points, which gave her 1,018 points for her career. Saadia Doyle added 11 points and five rebounds for Howard.
Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) led NSU with 15 points and Dalton followed with a career-high 14 points. Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas) recorded career-highs of 11 rebounds and eight assists. Brooks also had a career-high in rebounds (seven).
The Spartans return to action on Saturday when they play at Winston-Salem State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
