Wiley’s Last Second Shot Lifts S.C. State Over NSU, 74-73

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Whitney Wiley hit a layup with five-tenths of a second left in the game to help the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 74-73 victory of Norfolk State on Monday night at the S-H-M Memorial Center.

Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) scored a layup to put NSU (3-12, 0-6 MEAC) up by one, 73-72, but Wiley was wide open in the paint to hit the game winner on the other end of the court.

The game was close the entire way. With things tied at 20-all in the first half, the Spartans went on an 11-0 run to go up 31-20 after a layup by Batavia Owens (Norfolk, Va.) with 6:22 left in the opening period. NSU went into halftime up by six, 40-36.

In the second half, SCSU (6-12, 1-5 MEAC) cut the lead to one, 48-47, after a three-point play Tiara Knotts and took the lead on a 3-pointer by Sunikia Bullen with 11:40 left in the game.

With the Lady Bulldogs leading 54-52, Payne scored 10 straight points to give NSU a 60-54 advantage. The Spartans maintained the lead down to the 1:19 mark when Sophilia Hipps hit an off-balance jumper to put SCSU up 70-69. There were three more lead changes before Wiley's bucket sealed the win for the Lady Bulldogs.

NSU got beat on the boards 44-33 and only scored eight second-chance points compared to SCSU's 24. The Spartans shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the floor for the game, while the Lady Bulldogs connected on 30 of their 67 field goal attempts (44.8 percent).

Hipps led SCSU with a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds. Wiley finished the game with eight points, six rebounds and two steals.

Payne led four Spartans in double figures with a season-high 21 points. She was 8-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) had 13 points, while Owens had 11 points and Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) and Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) had 10 apiece.

Owens added a team-high nine rebounds and Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas) had a game- and career-high 12 assists.

NSU returns home to host Morgan State at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
