NORFOLK, Va. — Crystal Whittington had a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds off the bench to help the Coppin State women's basketball team to a 75-55 victory over Norfolk State on Monday night at Echols Hall. Whittington was one of four Lady Eagles to score in double figures.
Coppin State (8-11, 4-4 MEAC) struck first when Lakeytah Irving scored a layup with 19:37 left in the first half. Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) answered on the other end with a jumper with 19:19 left to tie it up, but Jeanine Manley made the second of two free throws to give the Lady Eagles the lead for the rest of the game. CSU went into halftime with a 12-point lead, 40-28.
The Lady Eagles led by as many as 22 points (65-43) in the second half after two free throws by Whittington at the 5:20 mark. NSU (3-14, 0-8 MEAC) could get no closer than 17, 71-54, the rest of the way. A jumper by Shawntae Payne with 31 seconds left ended the scoring and sealed the win the CSU.
Manley finished 19 points, seven rebounds and five steals, while Leola Spotwood had 12 points and three boards. Irving added 11 points and five rebounds.
For NSU, Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) had team-highs of 11 points and six rebounds. Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas) had seven points, three rebounds and a game-high six assists.
The Spartans continue their season-long homestand with a 4 p.m. matchup with Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday.
