HAMPTON, Va. — The Norfolk State women's basketball team dropped its sixth consecutive game on Saturday with a 68-47 loss to Hampton at the HU Convocation Center. With the win, Hampton improved to 13-10 overall and 8-3 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 3-17, 0-11.
The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 16-8 lead after a pair of free throws by Melanie Warner with 12:24 left in the first half. Ryan Owens (Norfolk, Va.) scored the next four points for the Spartans to cut Hampton's lead to four, 16-12, with 11:46 left. But back-to-back 3-pointers by Choicetta McMillian gave the Lady Pirates a 10-point advantage.
Hampton outscored NSU 19-15 the rest of the half to go into halftime up 41-27.
The Spartans limited the Lady Pirates to just 27 second-half points, but it was not enough to get over the large first-half deficit.
McMillian and Bernadette Fortune each had team-highs of 14 points for Hampton. Jericka Jenkins had 11 points and Quanniesha Perry had a double-double of 11 points and 16 rebounds.
Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) led NSU with a game-high 16 points and added six rebounds. Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) had nine points and six rebounds, while Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) tallied five points and six boards.
The Spartans continue their road swing with a 2 p.m. matchup at Howard on Monday.
