NORFOLK, Va. – Kyle McMyne pitched five scoreless innings, and Justin Bencsko had three RBI as Villanova completed a three-game sweep of Norfolk State, 10-1, on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
Villanova is now 3-0 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-3.
The Wildcats plated two runs in the top of the third. Marlon Calbi walked with one out and stole second. Matt Szczur then stole second, and the throw down to second skipped into center field to allow Calbi to score. Szczur advanced to third on the overthrow and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bencsko to make it 2-0.
NSU had a prime opportunity to catch up in the bottom of the third. Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.), Sammy Serafine (Chesapeake, Va.) and John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) led off the inning with consecutive singles to load the bases. But McMyne fanned James Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va.) for the first out. John Rasberry (Suffolk, Va.) then hit a shot into the gap in left-center. But Bencsko, the VU center fielder, ran it down for the second out and threw out Serafine at third for the final out of the inning before Wiggins could score from third.
The Wildcats rode that momentum to three more runs in the top of the third to chase Spartan starter Jordan Egan (Virginia Beach, Va.). Chris Johnson hit an RBI single to make it 3-0. An NSU error with the bases loaded allow Matt Fleishman to score from third. Egan then hit Bencsko with the bases loaded to allow the fifth run to score.
VU added five more in the eighth thanks to another sac fly by Bencsko, RBI hits by Daniel Parham and Adam Nelson, and a two-run single by Dain Hall.
The Spartans got their lone run in the eighth. Lynch struck out, but reached based on a wild pitch. Taylor followed with his second hit of the day, and the two runners moved up on a groundout. Shane Hoggard (Hampton, Va.) then knocked in Lynch with another groundout.
Taylor and Drew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) both went 2-for-4 for NSU.
Johnson was 3-for-4 and Tyler Sciacca was 2-for-5 for the Wildcats.
McMyne (1-0) was the winning pitcher. He worked five scoreless innings and gave up four hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Egan (0-1) took the loss, allowing five hits and five runs, two earned, in 3.2 innings of work. He walked two and had two strikeouts.
NSU is back in action next Saturday and Sunday at the round-robin Savannah State Classic in Savannah, Ga. Delaware State and Florida A&M are the other participants.
