Hipps, Wiley Spoil Home Finale For Spartan Women With 63-51 Win

NORFOLK, Va. — Sophilia Hipps scored a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting from the floor, including 5-of-10 from 3-point range, while teammate Whitney Wiley had 13 points to lead the South Carolina State women's basketball team to a 63-51 win over Norfolk State on Monday afternoon at Echols Hall.

NSU (4-19, 0-13 MEAC), playing in its final home game of the season, started the game on a 4-0 run, but Hipps and Wiley combined for SCSU's (9-17, 4-10 MEAC) first seven points to give the Lady Bulldogs a lead they would maintain for the rest of the game.

A 3-pointer by Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) with five seconds left in the first half got the Spartans within three, 30-27, heading into halftime.

The Lady Bulldogs opened the second half on an 11-3 run and were fueled by Hipps' 18 second-half points. SCSU took its largest lead of the game, 53-37, after the 3-pointer by Hipps with 8:22 left in the contest.

For the game, SCSU shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field and 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from beyond the arc. The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded the Spartans 36-31 and had 12 steals and four blocks, but lost the turnover battle 24-22.

NSU was 17-of-50 (34 percent) from the field for the game and (20 percent) from 3-point range. The Spartans made more free throws (15-of-20) than SCSU attempted (9-of-14).

Long led NSU with 16 points, while Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) had 12 and Batavia Owens (Norfolk, Va.) had 10. Dalton and Owens led all players with eight rebounds each.

The Spartans hit the road for their last three games of the regular season. They travel to Baltimore, Md. to play Morgan State at 2 p.m. on Saturday and then at Coppin State at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. They take on North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. next Thursday night at 5:30 p.m.
