SUMTER, S.C. — The Norfolk State women's tennis team dropped five matches at last week's MEAC round-robin event against other schools from the MEAC Southern Division.

NSU (1-9, 0-4 MEAC) opened play against Bethune-Cookman on Thursday and fell 7-0 to the Lady Wildcats. The Spartans put up a fight in the doubles matches, but lost all three and fell in straight sets in singles play.

Against North Carolina A&T on Thursday afternoon, sophomore Naeemah Brooks (Galloway, N.J.) defeated Nianna Henry 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Spartans' only win in that match.

NSU dropped 7-0 decisions to both South Carolina State and Florida A&M on Friday and Saturday, respectively.

The Spartans saved their best effort for the non-conference match against Winston-Salem State on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams narrowly beat the Spartans 4-3.

NSU got wins at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles from Jennifer Astbury (Chesapeake, Va.) and Brooks (8-5) and Foster (Norfolk, Va.) and Ashley Foster (Norfolk, Va.) (8-4), respectively.

In the singles matches, Brooks won her second contest of the weekend when she defeated Bianka Locklear 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3. Chenge Tsapayi (Harare, Zimbabwe) posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Johanna Nunez at No. 4 singles, but the Lady Rams got wins at Nos. 1, 2, 5 and 6 to take the match.

The Spartans host Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. at the NSU Tennis Complex.
