3 Spartan Runners’ Bid for Nationals Falls Short

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Juniors Thomas Speller (Chesapeake, Va.) and Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) and sophomore Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.) saw their bids to qualify for the NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships fall just short on Saturday night at the NCAA East Region meet at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.

Massenburg finished fifth in his NCAA quarterfinal heat in the 110-meter hurdles. He ran a time of 13.95 seconds, and finished 15th out of 24 in the quarterfinal round. Only the top 12 advance to the national meet next month.

Speller (fifth in heat one) and Holston (seventh in heat three) also came up shy of the top 12 in the 200 meters. Speller ran a time of 21.01 seconds to finish 17th out of the 24 quarterfinalists. Holston ran a time of 21.54 to place 22nd.

The Spartans will, however, be represented by senior Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) in the men's high jump at the national meet, which runs from June 9-12 in Eugene, Ore. on the University of Oregon campus. This will be Hall's second trip to the national meet in his Spartan career. He finished fifth in the East Region as a sophomore in 2008 and made the national finals. Hall tied for eighth this year with a top height of 6 feet, 11 inches on Friday night.
