Kipkosgei Wins 5,000 Meters at MEAC Outdoor Day 1

Spartans Take 1st-3rd, 5th Places in the Only Final on Thursday

Kipkosgei completed his own personal sweep of the MEAC indoor and outdoor 5,000m titles.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Norfolk State sophomore Amos Kipkosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) won the men's 5,000 meters on Thursday night, leading a 1-2-3 sweep of the medals for the Spartans during first-day action at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

Kipkosgei, who also won the conference indoor 5,000 meters this season, finished in a time of 14:58.23. He was followed by a pair of his classmates, Philemon Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) and Vincent Rono (Bomet, Kenya), who placed second and third, respectively. Kimutai crossed the finish line in 15:09.46 and Rono in 15:12.29. Junior Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.) came in fifth as the Spartans racked up 28 points in the only event final on Thursday.

Competition resumes on Friday morning with the completion of the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon, and the beginning of the other field events. Sprint and hurdles heats begin during the afternoon session.
