GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's track team remains in first place at the 2010 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships after day two and five events of the meet. NSU, seeking its fifth straight MEAC indoor-outdoor sweep, has 51.5 points, 12.5 ahead of second-place UMES.
The Spartans' biggest performance on Friday came from a somewhat unexpected source. Freshman John James (Suffolk, Va.) brought home a second-place finish in the men's high jump. He cleared a personal-best height of 6 feet, 9.75 inches. UMES' James Moore also cleared 6-9.75, but won based on fewer misses.
Senior Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) placed third in the high jump. The reigning MEAC indoor champ cleared 6-8, as did senior Eric Casper (Chesapeake, Va.), who tied for fourth based on more misses than Hall.
Junior Kendrick Richardson (Richmond, Va.) earned a fourth-place finish in the discus on Friday, throwing 134 feet, 8 inches.
The Spartans also fared well on the track Friday. Only heats were contested, but NSU will advance two runners each to Saturday's finals in the 100, 200, and 110 hurdles, and one each in the 400 and 800 meters. The Spartans will also have three athletes in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, and five in the 1,500.
