Howard Too Much for NSU in 5-0 Loss

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– Howard dropped the Norfolk State women's tennis team, 5-0, Saturday afternoon in a 4-1 matchup in the nation's capital.

Because of time limitations, the teams playing four singles matches and one doubles match. NSU saw its record drop to 0-5 on the season, while the Bison ran their record to 1-3.

Freshman Maryna Kariuk and senior Chenge Tsapayi teamed up in the doubles match, but the NSU duo could not overcome Howard's Alyssa Works and Ashley Moore in an 8-3 loss to their Bison foes.

At No. 3 singles, senior Jennifer Astbury came closest to earning a win, eventually falling to Brooke Hawthorne, 6-4, 6-2.

In the other matches, freshman Gabriella Jonsson lost to Katelyn Stokes, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while junior Naeemah Brooks fell to Brittney Morgan at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Howard's Anne Ahkimien swept sophomore Rebecca Graff at the No. 4 slot, 6-0, 6-0.

The women's team will join the men's squad in taking on Hampton next Friday. The women face the Pirates at 6 p.m. at Center Court in Newport News.
