Hammond Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State redshirt senior linebacker Corwin Hammond was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Hammond notched 12 tackles, nine solos, with five coming behind the line of scrimmage in the Spartans' 14-10 win over North Carolina A&T on Saturday. The five tackles for loss are a career high for Hammond, who also posted a sack, a forced fumble, and a pass breakup in the contest.

Hammond spearheaded a defensive effort that allowed A&T just 288 yards of total offense and registered season highs in tackles for loss (14) and sacks (seven). Hammond also kept alive NSU's streak of having at least one weekly conference award winner following every Spartan game this season.

Hammond leads NSU and ranks fifth in the MEAC with 91 total tackles this season (10.1 per game). He also has 10 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, two pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. This is the second time Hammond has earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor in his career.
