Spartans Put Winning Streak on Line at DSU

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. - Norfolk State (4-1, 2-0 MEAC) looks to remain atop the MEAC standings and extend their win streak to four games when they face the Delaware State Hornets (2-3, 0-2 MEAC) this Saturday in Dover, Del. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.

NSU is 4-1 overall, 2-0 in the MEAC after a 17-14 win over No. 22 South Carolina State last Saturday in Norfolk, Va. Chris Walley completed 21 of 32 passes for 153 yards and ran for a touchdown, and linebacker Onyemechi Anyaugo returned a second quarter SCSU fumble 84 yards for a touchdown for the Spartans. NSU needed a late goal-line stand and missed field goal by the Bulldogs to come away with the win over the Bulldogs, who have won at least a share of three straight MEAC titles and had won 15 consecutive MEAC road games. Anyaugo had 13 tackles to lead the NSU defense and Corwin Hammond added
10 stops.

Delaware State (2-3, 0-2 MEAC) dropped its third straight game, 34-7, at Florida A&M last Saturday night in Tallahassee, Fla. DSU trailed just 6-0 at the half, but gave up 14 points in both the third and fourth quarters to the Rattlers. FAMU outgained DSU 394-181, and limited the Hornets to just 54 yards rushing. Quarterback Nick Elko passed for 127 yards and a touchdown for DSU.

• DSU owns a 13-5 series edge over the Spartans. This will be the teams' 19th meeting.
• NSU has won the last two in the series.
• The last four meetings have been decided by 10 points or less.
• The Spartans are just 1-6 all-time at Alumni Stadium, with a 21-16 win in 2009 serving as their first-ever victory in Dover.

QUICK HITS
• NSU is aiming to continue its best start since 2007. The Spartans began that season 6-1 en route to an 8-3 mark and MEAC runner-up fi nish, which still ranks as NSU's best Division I season.
• DSU coach Kermit Blount will be facing NSU for the fi rst time as Hornets' coach, but has already faced NSU seven times previously when he coached at Winston-Salem State. Blount went 0-6-1 against NSU while coaching the Rams, including 0-3 against Pete Adrian-coached NSU teams.
• The Spartans will be looking for their eighth straight win over a Division I FCS opponent.
