Green Edges Gold, 70-64, in Men's Basketball Scrimmage

NORFOLK, Va. - Kyle O'Quinn posted game highs of 17 points, 21 rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Green team over the Gold team, 70-64, in the NSU men's basketball team's final intrasquad scrimmage on Wednesday evening at Echols Hall.

O'Quinn was 5-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line for the Green squad, which had four players score in double figures. Chris McEachin added 15 points and hit four of his team's 10 3-pointers, while Reggie Revels added 11 points and a trio of 3-pointers. Junior college transfer Quasim Pugh contributed 12 points and two 3-pointers for the Green.

Pendarvis Williams poured in 13 points and Winston Graham 12 for the Gold, which also had four players in double figures. #A.J. Rogers scored 11 and Brandon Wheeless# 10 for the Gold.

O'Quinn had 10 points and eight rebounds in the first half, and his Green squad shot 50 percent from the floor to take a 36-27 halftime lead. The Green led by as many as 13 points in the first half, 31-18, after a layup by Pugh with three and a half minutes left before the intermission.

The Gold squad, however, rallied in the second half. Kievyn Lila-St. Rose capped a 12-3 run with a 3-pointer to give the Gold team its biggest lead of the night, 62-56, with 4:45 left in the game.

But the Green team responded with an 8-0 run, punctuated by a McEachin 3-pointer, to give the Green a 64-62 lead with 2:55 left. Williams hit two free throws to tie the game up at 64-all, but the Green would not score over the final 2:17. Rodney McCauley hit a free throw with 2:12 left to give the Green team the lead for good, and Pugh made a layup a little more than one minute later to push the lead to three. O'Quinn later hit two free throws to seal the win.

The Spartans open their 2011-12 regular season with an 8 p.m. (EST) tip-off on Monday night at Marquette. The game is considered a first-round game in the 2011 Paradise Jam. The Spartans' home opener is on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 8 p.m. against Randolph College.
