Chris McEachin scored a game-high 17 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead host Norfolk State to a 63-43 win over Randolph College in the Spartans' home opener on Wednesday night at Echols Hall.
Kyle O'Quinn added 12 points and 13 rebounds for NSU (1-1), and Pendarvis Williams chipped in with 10 points.
NSU had a hard time separating from the gritty Division III WildCats (0-2) in the first half, and led just 17-11 after a layup by RC's Mike Ehilegbu with 7:14 left in the half.
But the Spartans clamped down on the defensive end and held Randolph without a field goal the rest of the first half. NSU outscored the WildCats 18-1 over the final seven minutes to go into the intermission with a 35-12 lead. The run included four points by O'Quinn and two 3-pointers by Williams.
NSU led by at least 16 points and by as many as 25 in the second half.
The Spartans held Randolph to just 37 percent shooting and forced 22 turnovers on the night. NSU also finished with seven blocks – including a career-high four by McEachin and three by O'Quinn – and 15 steals on the evening.
#A.J. Rogers added eight points off the NSU bench. Rodney McCauley# had a solid all-around game, grabbing eight rebounds and handing out a team-high four assists in addition to scoring four points. Williams contributed five rebounds and three steals to the winning effort.
Derrick Woods-Morrow led Randolph with 10 points. Julius Thomas had nine points and six rebounds, and Zach Desgain also scored nine points.
The Spartans travel to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Thursday for three games in the 2011 Paradise Jam. NSU's first game in Paradise is at 2 p.m. Friday against Drexel. The Spartans then play either Saturday or Sunday depending on Friday's result, and wrap up their stay in the islands in the final round on Monday.
