Spartans Advance to Paradise Jam Title Game with 66-53 Win over TCU

Box Score ST. THOMAS, U.S.V.I. – Kyle O'Quinn registered his third straight double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Chris McEachin added 16 points to lift Norfolk State to its third consecutive win, 66-53, over Texas Christian in the Paradise Jam semifinals on Sunday night at the University of the Virgin Islands' Sports & Fitness Center.

NSU (3-1) advances to Monday's 8:30 p.m. championship game against Marquette, which beat NSU 99-68 in the Spartans' season-opener last Monday night.

The Spartans shot 48 percent to overcome 24 turnovers caused by a quick TCU defense. But for the third straight game, NSU's defense also played well, holding the Horned Frogs to 25 percent shooting from the floor – the worst by an NSU opponent this season – and just 6 percent (1-of-18) from 3-point range. It marked the third consecutive game that NSU held its opponent to 56 points or less and less than 40 percent shooting from the floor.

TCU (3-1) started out the game cold and didn't hit its first field goal until Kyan Anderson's basket with 14:27 left in the half. But the Spartans also started off slowly on the offense end, and Anderson's shot actually gave TCU its first lead, at 8-6.

NSU quickly reeled off a 10-0 run, which included four O'Quinn points and was punctuated by a Brandon Wheeless tip-in, to take a 16-8 lead at the midway point of the first half. But TCU ratcheted its defense up a notch, forcing eight Spartan turnovers over the final 10 minutes of the half, as the Horned Frogs gradually pulled back into the lead at 25-21.

The Spartans kept their composure, and McEachin scored his first five points of the game over the final two minutes of the half, including a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left in the stanza, to give the Spartans a 28-26 halftime lead.

The second half was all NSU. McEachin scored 11 of his points after halftime. The first of his three second-half 3-pointers gave NSU its first double-digit lead, at 43-32, at the 12:36 mark of the half. That was part of a 14-1 Spartan run which McEachin capped with a fast-break layup off an assist from Wheeless that gave NSU its largest lead of the game, 50-33, with 9:38 remaining.

The Horned Frogs wouldn't go away and gradually sliced their deficit to six, 56-50, after an Aldrick McKinney layup with 1:57 left in the game. TCU promptly pressed NSU after the made basket and almost forced a turnover in the backcourt. But the Spartans maintained possession and got the ball to McEachin, who buried his fourth and final trey of the night from the right win to push NSU's lead back to nine, 59-50, with 1:37 left.

NSU finished the game off at the foul line. The Spartans hit a season-high 73 percent (22-of-30) from the charity stripe.

Wheeless and Pendarvis Williams added eight points apiece for NSU. The Spartans also outrebounded TCU 45-29, with Wheeless grabbing a season-high seven and Rodney McCauley six to aid O'Quinn's effort. O'Quinn also had three blocked shots.

McKinney scored 15 points and Hank Thorns 12 (on 3-of-14 shooting) for the Horned Frogs.
