Day 2 Results
LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State men's track team is in first place after the second day of competition at the 2011 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartan men, looking for their sixth straight MEAC indoor title, have 73 points after six events, more than twice as many as second-place Hampton (36).
The Spartans brought home a pair of first-place finishes on Friday. Junior Josef Tessema won the men's 5,000 meter run as part of a 1-2-4-6 finish in the event for NSU. Tessema clocked a time of 15:03.24. Teammate Amos Kipkosgei was second in 15:04.66.
Tessema and Kipkosgei also formed half of the Spartans' victorious distance medley relay team, which also included Kenneth Smith and Vincent Brown. The quartet won in 10 minutes, 17.17 seconds, just holding off Delaware State (10:18.32)
The following Spartans earned top-five finishes on Friday: Brown (third in the 800m), Raoul Hernandez (fourth in the pole vault), Ryan Owens (fifth in the pole vault), Rashad Cannon (second in the long jump) and Darris Shelton (third in the long jump).
NSU also fared well in Friday's semifinal heats. Three Spartans have qualified for Saturday's 60 meter finals, two are in the 200 and 60 hurdles finals, and one is in the 400 final.
The men's competition resumes at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the conclusion of the heptathlon.
