NORFOLK, Va. – Southern Miss swept the Norfolk State women's tennis team by a 7-0 score Thursday afternoon at Old Dominion's Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.
The Golden Eagles (5-7) won all six singles matches in straight sets and also won all three doubles matches to drop NSU to 2-10 on the season.
Senior
Jennifer Astbury forced a first-set tiebreaker against Asa Bengtson at No. 1 singles, but Bengtson earned an 8-1 victory in the tiebreaker to win the first set, 7-6. Bengtson then won the second set, 6-2.
Freshman
Gabriella Jonsson lost by a 6-3, 6-1 margin to Stephanie Dellocono at the No. 2 singles slot, while junior
Naeemah Brooks fell by a 6-4, 6-4 score to Moorea Williams at the third singles spot.
In the other three matches, Zoe Lee knocked off senior
Chenge Tsapayi, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 4 singles, Shannon Rogers swept sophomore
Rebecca Graff at No. 5, 6-1, 6-0, and Frances Askew downed freshman
Maryna Kariuk, 6-2, 6-0, at the No. 6 slot.
Brooks and Jonsson teamed up at No. 1 doubles, but Dellocono and Vroni Van Berlo were too much for the NSU duo in an 8-3 defeat. Elja Van Berlo and Asa Bengtson posted an 8-1 win over Astbury and Graff at No. 2 doubles, while Rogers and Lee swept Tsapayi and Kariuk at the third doubles slot, 8-0.
NSU will face James Madison next Friday at 2 p.m. in Harrisonburg, Va.
