NC Central Takes Down NSU, 5-2

– The Norfolk State women's tennis team began a stretch of three matches in three days with a 5-2 setback to North Carolina Central Sunday morning at the Cary Tennis Center.

The Spartans won at No. 3 singles, while the Eagles forfeited No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles as they improved to 9-10 overall. NSU fell to 2-13 on the season.

Freshman Gabriella Jonsson defeated Tatiana Velasquez, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles for NSU's lone competitive win on the day. Freshman Maryna Kariuk won by default at No. 6, while Kariuk and senior Chenge Tsapayi won by default at No. 3 doubles.

In the other two doubles matches, Jonsson and junior Naeemah Brooks fell at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, to Fredrica Lombard and Maria Nedstrom. In the second doubles match, senior Jennifer Astbury and sophomore Rebecca Graff lost to Kelly Chaparro and Oleysa Palko by an 8-3 score.

Palko knocked off Astbury, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Lombard defeated Brooks at the second singles slot, 6-1, 6-3. Graff fell to Chaparro at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Nedstrom downed Tsapayi, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 5 slot.

NSU will return home to host Chowan Monday at 3:30 and Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday at 3 p.m. Tuesday's match will honor the team's two departing seniors, Astbury and Tsapayi.
