Match Results

NORFOLK, Va.
– On the day the Norfolk State women's tennis team honored a pair of seniors in the last home match of the year, the Spartans sent them out in style with a 7-0 victory against Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Courts.

Seniors Jennifer Astbury and Chenge Tsapayi were recognized before the match and then went out and won in both singles and doubles as NSU moved its record to 4-13 on the season. The Marlins fell to 5-10 overall.

Astbury and Tsapayi defeated Cay Gee and Katelynn Duncan by an 8-1 score at No. 2 doubles, while teammates Gabriella Jonsson and Naeemah Brooks came out on top against Saida Bennou and Meredith Willett at the top doubles spot, 8-1.

Virginia Wesleyan defaulted at the third doubles position to give sophomore Rebecca Graff and freshman Maryna Kariuk the victory there. Kariuk also won by default at the No. 6 singles spot.

Astbury walked off the NSU home court for the last time a winner at the top of the lineup, downing Bennou, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Tsapayi did the same as she competed at the fourth spot, where she defeated Duncan, 6-0, 6-1.

Jonsson posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Willett at No. 2 singles, while Brooks had little trouble with Gee at the third singles position, 6-0, 6-1. In the other match on the afternoon, Graff earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Bittner at the fifth position.

The Spartans will be back on the court Saturday as they take on Navy at 4 p.m. in Annapolis, Md.
