Day 1 Results
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Norfolk State sophomore Darris Shelton finished ninth out of 48 long jumpers Thursday at the NCAA East Region track meet hosted by Indiana University, securing a spot in the national meet next month in Iowa.
Shelton's fourth jump out of six was his best of the day, as he jumped 24 feet, 11.25 inches. Teammate Rashad Cannon placed 33rd (23-3.5) in the same event.
Shelton and the other top 11 long jumpers from the East preliminary round will compete for national honors next month against the top 12 finishers from this weekend's West preliminary round.
In other events Thursday, junior sprinter Sean Holston advanced through the qualifying round of the men's 400 meters. Holston was the No. 11 qualifier in the men's 400 meters (47.23 seconds), placing second in his heat.
Thursday's qualifying rounds cut the field in each running event to 24 runners. Holston must finish in the top 12 in Friday's national quarterfinal round to earn a trip to national meet next month.
Also Thursday, MEAC high jump champion John James tied for 30th out of 47 high jumpers with a top height of 6 feet, 9 inches.
Junior hurdler Aramis Massenburg will also compete Friday in the qualifying round of the 110 meter hurdles.
