BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Junior hurdler Aramis Massenburg qualified for next month's NCAA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships and helped the Spartans set a little history in the process on Saturday evening at the NCAA East Region meet hosted by Indiana University.
Massenburg finished fourth in his 110 meter hurdles heat, but advanced to nationals based on his time of 13.71 seconds. The top three finishers in each of three quarterfinal heats at the regionals automatically qualify, along with the next three fastest times.
Massenburg ran in the third and final heat, which proved to be the fastest of the evening. Spencer Adams of Clemson (13.55), Eddie Lovett of Florida (13.64) and Adams Abdulrazaaq of Virginia (13.70) edged Massenburg to clinch the automatic berths, but Massenburg easily had the next-fastest time of the non-automatic qualifiers from the three heats. Based on time alone, Massenburg's 13.71 was the seventh-fastest time of the 12 qualifiers from the East Region. It was the second-best time of his career, trailing only the 13.63 he ran in the MEAC preliminaries.
Massenburg capped an extremely successful weekend for the NSU men's track & field team. He will join long jumper fellow first-time outdoor qualifiers Darris Shelton and 400-meter runner Sean Holston at next month's national meet, giving the Spartans three individual entrants for the first time in their Davison I history.
On the women's side, long jumper Champagne Bell also qualified, giving the track & field program four athletes in all who will make the trip to Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, June 8-11.
NSU also had men's and women's 4x100 relay teams compete Saturday. The women's team of Bell, Shanneka Claiborne, Ashanti Matthews and Wanetta Kirby placed 19th out of 24 in the quarterfinals with a time of 45.78. The men's team of Holston, Rashad Cannon, Quinten Walker and Ramaan Ansley was disqualified for an early baton exchange.
