Coastal Carolina Box Score | Davidson Box Score
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Riding momentum from its win the previous night, the Norfolk State volleyball team was unable to keep it going in a pair of 3-0 losses to Coastal Carolina and Davidson Saturday at the Wildcat Classic at Davidson.
The Chanticleers earned the victory in the early morning at Belk Arena, 25-21, 25-18, 26-24, as they ran their record to 5-8. The host Wildcats downed the Spartans, 25-13, 25-14, 25-18, to drop NSU to 2-7 on the year. Davidson improved its record to 10-2.
Against the Wildcats in the final match of the tournament, junior
Charlotte Armstead led the Spartans with 10 kills, while fellow junior
Beatriz Ferreira added eight. Much like earlier in the day, NSU was done in by attack errors, committing 23 errors on a .071 attack percentage.
Junior
Kristen Burt totaled 26 assists, and senior libero
Tracey Copley led the team with nine digs. Freshman
Jasmin Flowers had a hand of four of NSU's five blocks.
Burt was named to the all-tournament team after totaling 74 assists in the three matches.
Davidson, led by Caroline Brown with 12 kills, hit .366 in the match, thanks to 33 assists from Ariel Ley. Molly Crenshaw led all players with 11 digs, and Tindall Sewell posted five blocks.
The Wildcats took a 5-2 lead to begin play, but two kills from Armstead helped tie things up at 5-5. Davidson pulled ahead from there, winning seven of the next eight points and 11 of the next 13 for a 16-7 lead. Three straight errors on Davidson made it 17-11 a little later, but an 8-2 run by the Wildcats finished off the set from there, 25-13.
NSU stayed close to Davidson early in the second set, as a kill by Armstead made it 7-6. The Wildcats went on an 8-1 run a few serves later to push their lead to 17-8 before Ferreira threw down a kill to end the stretch. A kill from Armstead and a block from her and Flowers gave NSU a few more points before Davidson won the second set, 25-14.
Junior
Jasmine Frazier's kill put the score at 5-5 in the third set, and Davidson slowly pulled away, taking a 13-9 lead with a kill from Brown. Four straight points put the Wildcats out in front, 18-11, and the Spartans got no closer than 20-15 on a kill from Flowers and an attack error on Davidson.
Against the Chanticleers in the first match of the day, NSU only hit .050 for the match and was led by 10 kills from Armstead, while Coastal Carolina hit a healthy .235. The Spartans committed 24 attack errors, although for the sixth time in eight matches this year NSU had the advantage in digs, 42-40.
Burt tallied a double-double with 20 kills and 10 digs, and Copley added nine digs. Freshman
Adriana Ramos and Ferreira contributed six and five kills, respectively, while Armstead also had three blocks. The Chanticleers held an 8-7 edge in blocks for the match.
Lian Bernett led Coastal Carolina with 13 kills, while Kindra Bailey added eight. Sam Skryd posted 32 assists, and Lindsay Gill led the team with 10 digs. Katie Martin posted six kills and six blocks.
Neither team gained much of an early advantage when play got underway until the Chanticleers ran off three straight points for a 10-8 lead. The Spartans stayed within two or three points, and then finally got to within one at 15-14 when junior
Megan Lavo knocked down a service ace. A short time later, a kill by Ramos and an attack error on the Chanticleers tied things up at 18-18. Armstead hit back-to-back kills as NSU got its first lead since the start of the match a little later, 21-20, but Coastal Carolina ran off five straight points to end the set at 25-21.
NSU brushed off that first-set loss and jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the second, but a short time later Coastal Carolina scored four straight points to tie the set at 8-8. NSU got the two-point lead right back, but after the Spartans called timeout with the score tied 12-12, the Chanticleers scored five of the next six points to take a 17-13 lead. Kills by Armstead and Flowers allowed NSU to stay close, but Coastal Carolina went on an 8-2 run at the end of the set to easily win, 25-18.
The Spartans again went up early, taking a 5-1 lead in the third set, four of those points coming off Chanticleer attack errors. NSU kept it going, as a pair of solo blocks by Armstead during a 4-0 run made it 10-4 in favor of the Spartans. Down 13-6, though, Coastal Carolina scored seven straight points to negate that NSU lead.
The Spartans did not back down, as Lavo's third service ace of the match completed a quick 3-0 run and gave NSU a 21-17 lead. But much like the first set, NSU could not close things out, with the Chanticleers tying things right back up at 21-all. Down 24-23, Ramos kept the Spartans alive with a kill, but a pair of blocks by Coastal Carolina ended any hopes of an NSU comeback.
NSU will play its last tournament of the regular season next Saturday against High Point and Campbell at the High Point Invitational.
