Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – Battle of the Bay weekend turned into a Spartan rout as the Norfolk State volleyball team swept Hampton for the second time in three days, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Holland Hall.
NSU took over second place in the MEAC Northern Division with a 5-2 conference record after also defeating the Pirates on Friday in Norfolk by a 3-0 score. After Hampton defeated NSU 3-2 earlier in the year, the Spartans were victorious in Sunday's rubber match, 25-23, 25-19, 25-18.
The win, the seventh in the last nine matches, pushed the Spartans' overall record to 9-18. The last time NSU won seven matches with two or fewer losses in between was in 1996, the school's last year in Division II.
Hampton fell into a tie for third place in the North at 13-13 overall, 4-3 in the MEAC.
The Spartans used a balanced attack, led by senior
Charlotte Armstead with seven kills, and limited their errors to pull out the win. NSU hit .224 for the match. Hampton attacked at a .139 clip, but NSU's blocking was on target all afternoon. The Spartans posted an 11-4 edge in blocks.
Sophomore
Jasmin Flowers had a hand in five of those blocks, while freshman
Jessica Johnson led NSU with 11 digs to go with six kills.
The duo of Vendula Strakova and Krista Kraskura combined for 25 of Hampton's 35 kills in the match.
NSU took a 4-3 lead to start the match, and a block from Flowers and junior
Coralie Jarema gave the Spartans a 7-5 advantage. The Pirates used a 4-1 run for a one-point lead, but a little later Armstead's kill capped a 4-1 run for NSU for a 15-13 advantage.
The Spartans went up by three after a kill from Flowers, but Kraskura added a kill and a service ace to tie the score at 22-22. Armstead, though, added another kill, and a pair of attack errors on Hampton gave NSU the first set.
Back-to-back kills from Armstead and Flowers finished a 6-1 run to start the second. Several errors on Hampton pushed the Spartan lead to seven, and then Hampton had to call timeout down 14-6 after Johnson and junior
Goda Jankauskaite blocked a Pirate attack.
Three kills from Jarema within a four-serve span and another one from Johnson had NSU in control, 24-12. The large lead was needed, as Hampton went on a 7-0 run near the end of the set before Jankauskaite's kill sent NSU into the intermission holding a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Spartans built a 7-3 lead to start the third, but Hampton clawed back and got to one at 12-11 after a kill from Strakova. The Pirates were unable to get any closer, trading a point for every two from the Spartans. Hampton had to call timeout after NSU went up by five, 20-15, and the Pirates got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Jarema added six kills with four blocks, while freshman
Darcy Moore led the Spartans with 15 assists.
NSU will host Morgan State and Coppin State next weekend, beginning with the Bears Friday at 6 p.m. at Echols Hall for Breast Cancer Awareness Night.
