Johnson Named MEAC Defensive Player of the Week

NORFOLK, Va. – Senior Rob Johnson earned MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, the conference office announced. Johnson led NSU to a 2-1 week, including a MEAC win over Savannah State on Saturday.

The Roswell, Ga., native posted 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game with one block in NSU's three-game stretch. He also added 11.7 points and 3.3 assists while shooting 12-of-19 from the floor (63.2 percent) and 9-of-11 from the charity stripe (81.8).

Johnson totaled 10 points, nine rebounds and one block and career highs of six assists and four steals last Monday in a 73-67 loss at Morehead State. He nearly equaled his career high with 18 points to go along with six boards, three assists and a steal on Thursday in an 85-79 win over St. Francis Brooklyn in the team's home opener.

Then on Saturday, Johnson added seven points, four rebounds, three steals and an assist to help the Spartans take down Savannah State on the road, 55-45, in both teams' MEAC opener.

On the year, Johnson is averaging 8.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals while shooting 24-of-65 from the floor (36.9 percent) and 25-of-32 from the free throw line (78.1 percent).

Johnson and the Spartans return to the court Monday night at South Carolina State at 7:30 p.m.
