LANDOVER, Md. – Thanks to yet another distance medley relay gold medal, the Norfolk State men remain in first place after day two of the MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Spartans have 67.5 points after the second day, 25 ahead of second-place UMES (42.5).
Highlighting the day for NSU was a first-place finish in the distance medley relay for the seventh straight year. The team of Josef Tessema, Kenneth Smith, Vincent Brown and Nathnael Meseret crossed the finish line in 10 minutes, 4.79 seconds, nearly seven seconds ahead of second-place North Carolina A&T and roughly a second and a half the Spartans' meet-record pace set in 2010.
In the only other track final run on Friday, Brown finished fourth in the 800 meters in 1:54.77.
NSU also picked up a pair of third-place finishes in two field events on Friday. Sophomore Ian Copeland broke his own school record with a best effort of 52 feet, 11 inches in the weight throw. John James cleared 6-11 to place third in the high jump.
In Friday's heats, junior Keith Nkrumah tied former Bethune-Cookman national champion Ronnie Ash's meet record of 7.86 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to qualify for Saturday's finals. James Taylor won his heat in the 60-meter dash (6.77) and Sean Holston won his heat in the 400 (48.80) to advance to Saturday's finals, as well.
The meet resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday, with the Spartans looking to wrap up their seventh straight MEAC indoor title.
