Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – The Spartans completely dominated all five contested singles matches and won both doubles matches as well in a 7-2 win for the Norfolk State women's tennis team over Virginia Wesleyan Friday afternoon at the Marlins' Everett Tennis Center.
Virginia Wesleyan opened its 2012 season against the Spartans, while NSU improved to 2-4 on the year. The Marlins earned their two match points thanks to forfeit wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to the Spartans' five-player lineup.
Other than that, though, NSU handily won all five of the other singles matches by exact 6-0, 6-0 scores. The Marlins won just three games combined in the two doubles matches as well.
Senior
Naeemah Brooks and freshman
Laura Gutierrez earned an 8-2 victory over Katelynn Duncan and Stephanie Bittner at the top doubles spot. At the second position, junior
Rebecca Graff and freshman
Kia Batiste downed Jordan Hill and Hannah Rice, 8-1.
Rachel Calkins and Cay Gee won by default at the third doubles slot. Gee also had the default win at the sixth singles position.
At the top two spots in singles play, Brooks defeated Duncan at the No. 1 slot, while Gutierrez also won in straight sets without dropping a game over Hill at No. 2 singles. Graff continued NSU's solid play at the third position over Bittner.
In the other two contested matches, sophomore
Maryna Kariuk posted a perfect sweep of Rice at the No. 4 slot, and Batiste also accomplished the feat at the fifth position against Calkins.
NSU will host Longwood Saturday at 11 a.m. in the first match of the season for the Spartans at the NSU Tennis Courts.
