NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior
Josef Tessema recorded two more victories and
John James won the high jump Saturday to pace the Spartan men's track team at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport.
In his first time running the 800 meters this season, Tessema won in a time of 1 minute, 53.82 seconds. That ranks as the top time by a Spartan this season.
Tessema also won the 5,000 meters in a personal-best time of 14:56.11 to lead a 1-2-3 NSU sweep of that event. Senior
Philemon Kimutai was second in 15:07.98, and sophomore
Nathnael Meseret was third in 15:22.56.
The Spartans' only other win on Saturday came via junior James in the high jump. He cleared 6 feet, 8.25 inches and won based on fewer misses than runner-up Hoova Tyler.
Robert Thrasher tied for fourth in the same event, clearing 6-4.25.
NSU also got top-five finishes on the track from
Sean Holston and
James Taylor, who placed second (6.78) and third (6.88) in the 60 meters;
Keith Nkrumah was third in the 200 (22.13) and fifth in the 60 (6.96);
Kameron George and
Amos Kipkosgei, who placed fourth (4:25.15) and fifth (4:26.58), respectively, in the mile.
In other field events, sophomore
Ian Copeland broke his own school record in the weight throw. His best effort was 51-11.75, good for fourth place. His previous best was 51-11 at UMES last month.
NSU returns to action next weekend at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas.
