NC Central Secures 6-1 Win Over NSU

Match Results

NORFOLK, Va.
– Freshman Kia Batiste picked up the only win on the day during the Norfolk State women's tennis team's 6-1 loss to conference foe North Carolina Central Friday afternoon at the NSU Tennis Courts.

Playing its third match in as many days, including second in a row in MEAC play, NSU saw its conference record drop to 1-2 on the season and its overall mark fall to 2-7. The Eagles kept pace in the race for one of the top 4 spots in the Southern Division, as they ran their record to 6-4, 2-2.

Batiste had a rather easy time in her No. 5 singles match, downing Lakisha McDougald, 6-0, 6-0, for the Spartans' lone win on the day. N.C. Central won the top four singles matches and both contested doubles bouts. Because of NSU's five-player lineup, the Eagles won the No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles matches by default.

Batiste and freshman Maryna Kariuk fell by an 8-0 score in the No. 2 doubles match against Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood, while senior Naeemah Brooks and freshman Laura Gutierrez dropped an 8-3 decision to Olesya Palko and Cameron Chatman at the top doubles slot.

At the top of the lineup in singles action, Brooks fell short against Palko, 6-4, 6-2, while Chatman earned a straight-sets win over Gutierrez at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-2. In the other two contested spots, Nekrasova took care of Kariuk, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 3 spot, and Wood pulled out a 6-1, 6-4 victory over junior Rebecca Graff at the No. 4 position.

NSU will get little rest as the Spartans head to South Carolina to face the Bulldogs of S.C. State Sunday at 11 a.m.
