Match Results

ORANGEBURG, S.C.
– South Carolina State kept its perfect record intact as the Bulldogs defeated the Norfolk State women's tennis team, 7-0, Sunday morning at the SCSU Tennis Courts.

The Bulldogs improved to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the MEAC Southern Division while dropping the Spartans to 2-8 overall, 1-3 in conference play. S.C. State swept all five contested singles matches in straight sets and also picked up a pair of dominating wins in doubles play.

In singles play, senior Naeemah Brooks fell to Suhaila Jad at the top spot of the lineup, 6-1, 6-1, and freshman Laura Gutierrez suffered the same fate in a 6-3, 6-0 loss to Akilah James at the No. 2 spot. Maria Craciun posted a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory against junior Rebecca Graff at the No. 3 slot, and sophomore Maryna Kariuk succumbed to Sabrina Mendez at the No. 4 position.

In the last contested match, Victoria Khathei was victorious over NSU freshman Kia Batiste at the No. 5 position, 6-1, 6-2. S.C. State also won the No. 6 position by default due to NSU's five-player lineup.

The shorthanded Spartans also forfeited the No. 3 doubles match, while the Bulldogs also won the other two, including an 8-1 defeat of Kariuk and Gutierrez at the top spot by James and Craciun, 8-1. Jad and Mendez took down Brooks and Graff at the No. 2 position, 8-0.

After playing four matches in five days, the Spartans will take a much-needed break before facing UMES twice on Saturday at the NSU Tennis Courts. The first match against the Hawks gets underway at 1 p.m., with the second match set to start right after.
