NSU Defeats Virginia Union, Virginia State at VSU

PETERSBURG, Va.
– The Norfolk State women's tennis team won every contested match as the Spartans downed Virginia Union and Virginia State by identical 7-2 scores Tuesday at the VSU Tennis Courts.

Against the Panthers in the morning, the Spartans easily won both doubles matches played and gave up no more than two games in a set in singles play. NSU (6-8) faced a more difficult opponent in Virginia State later in the day on VSU home court, but the Spartans still won every contested match.

Senior Naeemah Brooks and junior Rebecca Graff got things going at the No. 1 doubles spot against Virginia Union, defeating Kiara Miller and Elizabeth Parson by an 8-0 score. Freshman Laura Gutierrez and sophomore Maryna Kariuk# did the same against Katrina Joe and Dejamine Bryson at the No. 2 slot.

Both Virginia Union and Virginia State won the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches against the Spartans by default.

Brooks took care of VU's Miller at the top spot in singles play, 6-1, 6-1, as did both Kariuk and freshman Kia Batiste at the No. 4 and 5 singles slots, respectively. Kariuk downed April George by the 6-1, 6-1 score at the fourth spot, while Batiste handled business by the same score against Bryson at No. 5.

In the other two matches, Gutierrez claimed victory over Parson 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 position, while Graff easily won against Joe at the No. 3 slot, 6-1, 6-0.

Then, taking on Virginia State on VSU's home court, in the mid-afternoon, the Spartans sweated a little more before earning the win. NSU won both doubles matches by 8-6 scores, starting with Brooks and Graff over Amanda Spencer and Zaire Simmons at the top spot.

Kariuk and Gutierrez also won by two against Nakesha Harry and Sharmane Tonkins at the No. 2 spot. Kariuk also earned the victory over Tonkins at the No. 4 spot in the lineup, 7-5, 6-2. Batiste, meanwhile, won the No. 5 match against Valencia Williams, 6-2, 6-3.

Brooks earned the win over Spencer at the top spot in the singles lineup, 6-2, 6-2, and Gutierrez dropped just one game during a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Simmons at the second spot. Graff was perfect in her No. 3 match against Harry, 6-0, 6-0.

NSU will head to another CIAA school, Chowan, on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
