NORFOLK, Va. – Freshman outfielder
Haley Ward of the Norfolk State softball team was named the MEAC Rookie of the Week on Monday afternoon, as announced by the conference office.
In a pair of wins over North Carolina Central last week, Ward batted 6-for-9 with two runs scored and two RBI, helping NSU sweep the Eagles, 6-3, 7-1. In the second game of the doubleheader last Wednesday, Ward hit 5-for-5 and tied a school record with three doubles.
Her five-hit day marked the first time an NSU player had five hits in a game in at least 10 years. She also became just the fifth player ever with three doubles in a game in NSU history.
On the season, Ward leads the team with a .395 batting average, 16 runs and seven doubles to go along with one home run and 10 RBI.
After NSU's three-game series with Howard over the weekend was canceled, the Spartans will return to the field Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader at James Madison.
