Justin Lee had a career-high three hits and outfielder
Cameron Day hit the go-ahead two-run single in the top of the seventh inning as Norfolk State beat host Coppin State 10-4 on Friday night at Joe Cannon Stadium.
With the win, the Spartans (19-26, 13-9 MEAC) clinch the No. 2 seed from the MEAC Northern Division heading into next week's MEAC Tournament, which will be held at NSU's Marty L. Miller Field starting Wednesday.
The Eagles (1-49, 0-22) rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game after the fifth before the Spartans pulled away late. Chris Warren knocked in Day with an RBI single in the fourth. Warren scored later in the frame on an Eagle error to put the Spartans ahead, 2-0.
But CSU tied the game with single runs in the fourth and fifth off Spartan starter Chris Horne. Ian Arciaga hit a run-scoring single in the fourth before Zach Hawk tacked on an RBI double in the fifth to knot the score.
After a scoreless sixth inning, NSU broke on top to stay with three runs in the top of the seventh. Lee led off with a single, and both he and Mikey Bruno scored on Day's two-run single. Day later crossed the plate after a CSU miscue to make it 5-2 in NSU's favor.
Chase Kyriacou added a sacrifice fly in the eighth before the Spartans put the game out of reach with a four-run ninth. Lee had the big hit in the frame, a two-run single. Warren also added another RBI single in the frame.
Horne (6-5) recorded his second straight win for the Spartans. He went seven innings and allowed seven hits and two runs to go with three walks and seven strikeouts. Friday marked Horne's fourth appearance this season with seven punchouts. Jordan Egan worked a scoreless eighth and Jeremy Sandifer pitched the ninth.
Lee finished 3-for-5 with two RBI while Day went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, two RBI and two stolen bases. Bruno went 2-for-6 with two steals, and Warren was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
Mike Wright had three of the Eagles' eight hits. Hawk (0-1) took the loss on the mound, allowing three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of relief work.
The teams conclude their series and regular-season play with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
