NORFOLK, Va. – Former Norfolk State star Kyle O'Quinn took one step closer to his NBA dream after signing a contact with the Orlando Magic Thursday, a month and a half after becoming the first NSU player in more than 20 years to hear his name called on draft night.
Taken in the second round of the draft with the 49th overall pick, O'Quinn had a strong showing in the Orlando Pro Summer League July 9-13, averaging 8.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest over the five-game stretch. He earned second-team all-summer league honors for his performance.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed by the Magic.
O'Quinn led NSU to its first-ever MEAC title in 2012, earning MEAC Player of the Year, MEAC Defensive Player of the Year, MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Player and All-MEAC first-team honors. He was also picked as an AP Honorable Mention All-America selection.
He had perhaps the best performance of the season with a 26-point, 14-rebound effort in an upset of No. 2 seed Missouri in the NCAA tournament. At the time, it marked just the fifth time a No. 15 seed knocked off a No. 2 seed in the tournament.
O'Quinn averaged 15.9 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.7 blocks per game as a senior, finishing fifth in the nation with 20 double-doubles as well as 14th in field goal percentage (57.3 percent), 15th in blocks and 16th in rebounding.
He later earned the Lou Henson Award as the country's best mid-major player as well as the MVP award at the Portsmouth Invitational before working out for close to 20 teams prior to the draft. He became the first NSU player since 1988 and the first MEAC player since 1998 to be picked.
