Coppin State Hands NSU MEAC-Opening Loss, 3-0

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State gave the Norfolk State volleyball team a rude welcome to the 2012 conference season as the Eagles swept NSU, 3-0, Friday night at the Physical Education Complex.

Coppin State won 25-18, 25-19, 25-18, to improve to 6-7 overall on the year, 2-0 in conference play. The Eagles surpassed both their conference and MEAC win totals from last year. The Spartans, meanwhile, dropped their 11th in a row and fell to 2-16 overall, 0-1 in the MEAC.

The Eagles played well, led by Ariel Richard's 10 kills, and hit .269 as a team for the match. Despite a match-high 11 kills from senior Charlotte Armstead, NSU shot itself in the foot numerous times, committing 27 attack errors and attacking at just a .031 clip.

Tied 5-5 in the first set, the Eagles used a pair of kills from Richard to take a 10-6 lead. Freshman Angie Darcus laid down a pair of kills to help NSU cut the deficit to two, 14-12, but a short time later Coppin State used a 6-0 run for a seven-point advantage. Senior Beatriz Ferreira added a couple of kills late in the set but NSU was unable to get any closer than five the rest of the way.

The Spartans found themselves down 8-2 in the second set, but NSU slowly chipped away at the lead, getting to within three, 11-8, on a service ace from freshman Darcy Moore. Coppin State responded with a 9-3 run for a 23-14 lead, and after NSU made them sweat a little, the Eagles finally put the Spartans away.

Coppin State wasted little time in taking the lead in the third set, 12-4 early on. The Spartans got to within five at 12-7 thanks to a kill from junior Coralie Jarema and then again at 17-12. Darcus and freshman Jessica Johnson teamed up for a block that made it 19-15 in favor of the Eagles, but Coppin State quickly put the Spartans away after that point.

CSU's Gabrielle Otero led all players with 17 digs, while Chelsee Sauni handed out 27 assists. Darcus had six kills for NSU, while redshirt sophomore Noelle Eagles led the Spartans with eight digs.

NSU will look to bounce back Friday at Morgan State at 3 p.m.
