Roach Lifts UMES Past NSU in Overtime

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Karona Roach had 31 points to lift Maryland Eastern Shore over Norfolk State 86-80 in overtime at the W.P. Hytche Center on Saturday afternoon. 

Senior Recca Trice missed a free throw with 1.1 seconds left in regulation to send the Spartans (2-12) and the Hawks (5-8) into overtime tied at 66.

Roach made a layup in the first three seconds of overtime to give the Hawks a 68-66 lead over NSU.

Junior Kashay Barnes drained a 3-pointer at the other end with 4:20 remaining in overtime.  The Spartans shot 56.3 (9-of-16) percent from behind the arc.

UMES answered with a pair of 3-pointers by Shawnee Sweeney and Sha-Kiyla Finney with 3:28 remaining to give the Hawks a 74-69 lead over the Spartans.

Trice knocked down another 3-pointer for the Spartans with 2:43 on the clock as NSU trailed UMES, 75-72.

Alexis Udoji's layup with 1:50 left in overtime gave the Hawks a 79-72 lead over NSU.

Trice made a pair of free throws with 1:04 remaining in overtime but the Spartans continued to trail UMES, 79-74.

Roach, Finney and Jessica Long would shoot free throws the rest of the way to seal the win for the Hawks.

NSU had a collective effort in scoring as Barnes led the Spartans with a career-high 25 points, three assists and two steals.  Rachel Gordon finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, Ebony Brown had 14 points, and Trice added 13 points, six rebounds and eight assists.  The Spartans shot 46.3 (31-of-67) percent and held UMES to 37.3 (25-of-67) percent.

Aside from Roach, the Hawks had two other players in double-figures.  Finney tallied 14 points and six assists while Sweeney added 13 points.

The Spartans return to action on Monday when they face Howard at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.  The tip-off between the Spartans and the Bison is at 4:30 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
