GREENVILLE, N.C. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team picked up a few wins at the East Carolina Invitational over the weekend.
On day one, the Spartans picked up wins in doubles play as junior Yvonne Kamegne and freshman Ana Popovic defeated ECU's Scarlett Watson and Vanessa Fuleihan, 8-4 in flight 3. Kamegne and Popovic also posted an 8-4 win against North Carolina Central's Mia Ramic and Tamara Jeremic.
Sophomore Andrea Macchiavello and junior Mafalda Lhorca were also victorious in doubles play with their 8-7 win over ECU's Maria Storozheva and Elizabeth Zurawel in flight 2. Macchiavello and Lhorca also suffered an 8-5 loss to Aissa Muamba and Lynsey Cover of N.C. Central.
In flight 1 of the doubles competition, freshman Liza Gordeeva and junior Krystal Scott fell to ECU's Neena Wanko and Nicole LaDuca, 8-7. Gordeeva and Scott also suffered an 8-4 loss to N.C. Central's Ekaterina Nekrasova and Rebecca Wood.
NSU only picked up one win in singles play on day one as Lhorca posted a 7-6(4), 6-3 win against ECU's Zurawel in flight 5.
In flight 1, Gordeeva fell to ECU's Melis Tanik, 7-6(4), 6-0. Macchiavello competed in flight 2, where she suffered a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Michelle Castro of ECU. In flight 3, Kamegne was upended by ECU's Emily Groeneveld, 6-0, 6-0. Scott competed in flight 4, where she fell to ECU's Dana Gray, 6-3, 6-3. Popovic closed things out for the Spartans in flight 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Watson of ECU.
On day two, the Spartans claimed a trio of wins in the singles competition. Popovic competed in flight 6, where she upended N.C. Central's Jeremic, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5). Popovic also claimed a 6-5 victory after ECU's Fuleihan retired due to injury. In flight 5, Scott posted a 7-5, 6-3 win against N.C. Central's Cover, before falling to Storozheva of ECU, 7-5, 6-2.
In flight 1 of the singles competition, Gordeeva suffered a 7-5, 6-1 loss to Castro of ECU and she also fell to ECU's Tanik, 7-6 (4), 6-0. Gordeeva also suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss to N.C. Central's Wood.
Macchiavello competed in flight 2, where she fell to ECU's Castro, 6-2, 6-1, before suffering a 6-1, 6-0 loss to ECU's Tanik. Macchiavello was also defeated by N.C. Central's Muamba, 6-4, 6-3.
In flight 3, Kamegne was upended by ECU's Groeneveld, 6-0, 6-0. Kamegne was also defeated by ECU's Gray, 6-4, 7-5 and by N.C. Central's Nekrasova, 6-0, 6-4.
Rounding out the singles competition was Lhorca, who competed in flight 5. She fell to ECU's Watson, 6-3, 6-0. Lhorca also suffered a 6-4, 6-2 loss to N.C. Central's Ramic.
NSU will close out the fall schedule at the ITA Regional in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 18-22.
