UTPA Tops NSU 50-36 at UTSA Thanksgiving Classic

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Norfolk State women's basketball team suffered a 50-36 loss to the University of Texas-Pan American on Friday night at the Convocation Center. Junior Quineshia Leonard led the Spartans with nine points and eight rebounds.

NSU dropped to 2-3 on the season and UTPA moved to 3-2.

Senior Rachel Gordon tallied a career-high 26 rebounds and also contributed six points. Gordon only needed two rebounds in tonight's game to move into eighth place in the NSU record book for career rebounds. She now has 794 career rebounds.

The Spartans started the game on a 5-0 run after a layup from Leonard with 19:22 to go.

UTPA's Tonisha Walker scored on a jumper to spark a 13-3 run for the Broncs. Brianna Sifford capped the run with a pair of free throws to make the score 18-8 with 9:00 left before halftime.

NSU got within six as Leonard continued to score inside on a pair of back-to-back buckets with 5:14 left in the half. Leonard scored seven of her nine points in the first half.

A 3-pointer from Shawnte Goff with 16 seconds left sent UTPA into halftime with a 24-15 lead over the Spartans.

The last time NSU failed to score 20 points in a half was Feb. 18, 2013 at Hampton (16 points). NSU only shot 18 percent (6-of-33) in the first half against UTPA.

The Spartans came out of the locker room on fire as freshman Kieera Basey drained a 3-pointer with 19:05 left in the game to keep NSU within six, 26-20. Basey was 2-of-4 from behind the arc.

The Broncs responded on the other end as Brittany Bush nailed a jumper to cap a 14-6 run with 8:59 to go. UTPA continued to lead the Spartans, 40-26.

Redshirt junior Rae Corbo scored her second bucket of the night with 8:27 remaining to give NSU 28 points. She finished the night with only six points, ending her double-digit scoring streak at four games.

UTPA led by as many as 16 points with 8:11 left in regulation. The Broncs closed out the game on a 10-8 run as Jasmine Thompson scored in the paint with 1:17 left on the clock.

The Spartans shot 24.2 percent (15-of-62) from the field and only 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from the free throw line. For the first time this season there were no Spartans in double-figures. Freshman Dominique Harper finished with eight points and one steal. Basey posted six points and two assists.

The Broncs were 18-of-66 (27.3 percent) on the night and shot 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from free throw line. Goff led all scorers with 14 points and five rebounds. Bush also added eight points.

NSU will play UT-San Antonio on Saturday night. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. eastern standard time and 8 p.m. central standard time at the Convocation Center.
