NSU Falls Short at Morehead State, 73-67

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Redshirt junior Rae Corbo led Norfolk State with 17 points, but it was not enough as Morehead State defeated NSU, 73-67, in the season opener on Friday afternoon at Johnson Arena.

NSU falls to 0-1 on the season, while Morehead State improves to 1-0.

Corbo and junior Quineshia Leonard were the only Spartans to score in double-figures. Leonard notched her first double-double of the season as she finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Leonard scored six of the first eight points for the Spartans, which included a layup to give NSU an 8-3 lead over Morehead State with 15:56 to go in the first half.

From there the Eagles went on to outscore NSU, 11-6 as Terrice Robinson nailed a jumper to give Morehead State a 17-14 lead with 8:48 left before halftime. Robinson was Morehead State's leading scorer and earned 13 of her 19 points in the first half.

NSU continued to work hard in the paint and freshman Logan Powell scored her first points of the season on a layup with 2:58 remaining in the half. The Spartans continued to trail Morehead State, 28-24.

Corbo made a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to score the last points of the half for the Spartans. Morehead State led NSU 32-29 at halftime.

The Eagles started the second half with an 8-2 run as Allie Turner nailed a 3-pointer with 16:16 left in regulation to give Morehead State a 40-31 lead over the Spartans.

Corbo drained a jumper with 15:17 left, but the Spartans continued to trail the Eagles, 40-33.

Shanice Parker capped a 10-2 run for Morehead State as she made a layup with 13:11 to give the Morehead State its largest lead of the game, 50-35.

NSU continued to fight and Corbo sparked an 11-6 run that was topped off by another layup from Powell 9:43 remaining in the second half. The Spartans were still behind Morehead State, 56-46.

Turner drained a 3-pointer at the 7:49 mark to make the score 61-47. Morehead State shot 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from behind the arc.

The Spartans managed to pull within three on a 12-1 run with free throws from Corbo and junior Ebony Brown, as well as layups from Leonard, freshman Dominique Harper and senior Rachel Gordon. Brown's free throw with 4:09 left made the score 62-59 in favor of Morehead State.

Robinson scored the last field-goal for Morehead State with 1:33 remaining to give the Eagles a 69-62 lead.

On the other end, Leonard made the last field-goal for the Spartans with 48 seconds to go, but it was not enough.

The Spartans shot 30 percent (18-of-60) from the field and were 31-of-41 (75.6 percent) from the free throw line. Aside from Corbo and Leonard, other notable scorers for NSU were Gordon and Harper, who added eight points each, respectively. Gordon also grabbed seven rebounds. Harper had six rebounds.

The Spartan defense collected 13 steals and scored 17 points from 25 Eagles turnovers. NSU also outrebounded Morehead State, 49-40.

Morehead State had three players score in double-figures. Aside from Robinson, Almesha Jones picked up 16 points and Parker had 15 points. The Eagles shot 40.4 percent (23-of-57) from the field and shot 62.9 percent (22-of-35) from the free throw line.

NSU will host its first home game of the season on Nov. 15 against Radford at Joseph Echols Hall. Tip-off is at 6 p.m.
