NSU Falls to UTSA in Overtime 72-63

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Senior Rachel Gordon tallied 15 points and 14 rebounds, but it was not enough as the Norfolk State women's basketball team fell to UTSA in overtime, 72-63, on Saturday night at the Convocation Center in the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic. This was the first overtime game of the season for the Spartans.

The Spartans (2-4) started the game with a bucket inside from Gordon with 19:43 left before halftime that sparked an 11-4 run for NSU. Gordon scored 11 of her 15 points in the first half.

The Roadrunners (3-4) responded with a 10-4 run that included pair of 3-pointers from Kamra King, who led all scorers with 23 points. UTSA trailed NSU 15-14 with 10:54 remaining in the half.

NSU continued to be aggressive and Rae Corbo drove inside the lane with 7:05 on the clock to give the Spartans a 25-16 lead. Corbo finished the game with 11 points, two assists and two steals.

Freshman Logan Powell knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:25 left to send the Spartans into halftime with a 31-25 lead over UTSA. Powell tied her career-high of eight points and also posted a career-high 12 rebounds.

The Spartans shot 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from the field in the first half.

UTSA scored the first points of the second half on a layup from King with 18:56 on the clock. The Roadrunners continued to trail NSU, 31-27.

Junior Ebony Brown made a jumper with 18:41 left to spark an 8-5 run that ended with a basket inside from junior Quineshia Leonard with 13:35 remaining in the game. NSU continued to lead 39-32.

UTSA would not go away and took the lead for the first time 48-47 with 6:38 to go after a basket from Alana Heard.

Freshman Kieera Basey put the Spartans back up by two 50-48 after she hit a 3-pointer with 6:20 remaining in the game. Basey was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc on the night.

NSU and UTSA continued to trade buckets and a layup from Miki Turner gave UTSA its final lead of the half at 58-56 with 42 seconds left. There were three lead changes in the second half.

The Spartans continued to fight and Brown nailed a jumper with three seconds left to send NSU into overtime with UTSA tied at 58. She finished the game with 13 points on 6-for-13 shooting.

NSU and UTSA traded buckets in the first two possessions of overtime as Mannasha Bell scored in the paint for the Roadrunners and Powell made a layup with 4:09 left to tie the game at 60.

UTSA proved to be too much for the Spartans and Mathilde Hergott scored on a layup to cap a 12-0 run to make the score 72-60 with 42 seconds to go in overtime. NSU's last field-goal of the game came was on a 3-pointer from Basey.

NSU finished the game shooting 43.5 percent (27-of-62) and was 75.0 percent (6-of-8) from the free throw line. The Spartans did not take a free throw shot in the second half or overtime.

Gordon was also named to the UTSA Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament team.

The Spartans will open MEAC play on Thursday against Florida A&M. Game time is at 6 p.m. in Joseph Echols Hall.
